Green Bay High School is leading the way, as part of a NCEA Level 1 Science Pilot.

The Ministry of Education is working collaboratively with schools, rangatahi, whānau, communities and other key stakeholders to deliver changes to NCEA. These changes are scheduled to be phased in over the next few years, with new achievement standards implemented in Levels 1, 2 and 3 by January 2026.

Check out this [video clip](https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=694299358921329&extid=CL-UNK-UNK-UNK-AN_GK0T-GK1C&ref=sharing) from the NCEA Education website, featuring our very own Science Head of Department Linda Haycock, and Year 11 students, Hannah Peterson and Annie-Rose Collins!

One of the benefits of NCEA changes is to ensure learning is more relevant for students. Green Bay High School’s NCEA Level 1 Science Pilot is now in its second year. Linda says the freedom to do what works for students, and to deliver what they are interested in, helps engagement. Students are "learning a science without actually realising they are learning a science."

Hannah and Annie-Rose say they have enjoyed the positive changes, which are both interesting and engaging, and now feel confident with their knowledge to study further sciences, such as Biology, Chemistry, or Physics at Level 2.

More about the NCEA Change Programme can be found on the [NCEA Education](https://ncea.education.govt.nz/what-ncea-change-programme) website.
