Who Ate All The Pi's?

Friday, 10th March 2023 at 9:30am

You could say Daniel Colquhoun ate all the pi's during Pi Day - an event held by the Maths department in support of International Mathematics Day.

Daniel (Year 11) memorised 199 digits of pi - winning 50 House Points for Piha!
So, what is the explanation of pi? The definition of pi is simple: It's a circle's circumference divided by its diameter. (The diameter is twice the radius or double the length from any point on the circle to its center. The circumference is the distance around a circle.) It's about fitting the diameter as many times as possible into the perimeter of the circumference.

Each year on 14 March, a mathematical global event takes place, giving participants of all ages and skill levels the chance to put their mathematical minds to work! March 14 is celebrated in many countries as Pi Day. This is because the date is written as 3/14 in some countries - which is the mathematical constant Pi being approximately 3.14.
International Day of Mathematics is a project led by the International Mathematical Union with the support of numerous international and regional organisations.
Green Bay High School's Maths department held challenges during interval and lunch time, with coveted HOUSE POINTS up for grabs!

  • Interval - F1 - Draw a perfect circle freehand - top ten circles win 5 house points.
  • Interval - F2 - Calculate pi by hand using a mini whiteboard - win 5 house points.
  • Lunch - F3 - Memorise 11 digits of pi - win 5 house points.
  • Memorise the most digits of pi - win 50 house points!
  • Lunch - F2 - Maths mini puzzle challenges - win 5 house points.
  • Lunch - F1 - Get a slice of pie - gold coin donation. A grand total of $130.60 was raised towards the house beaches flood and cyclone recovery (that's 66 slices of apple pie and what felt like a million miniature savoury pies)!
