New Zealand (Aotearoa)

(Aotearoa is the Māori name for New Zealand). Situated in the South Pacific Ocean, 2,000 kilometres south-east of Australia. New Zealand has a total land area of 269,680 square kilometres. The capital is Wellington and the largest city is Auckland. The population of New Zealand is about 5 million. New Zealand is an increasingly multicultural society.

Welcome

We welcome international students from all over the world to Green Bay High School and value the diversity of ideas and culture they add to our school and community. The interaction they have with local students and host families helps break down stereotypes and encourages intercultural communication and understanding.

Green Bay High School has been serving its community for over 45 years. Over this time it has been a leader in educational innovation, nurtured an outstanding number of very successful graduates and placed a high value on developing independent, confident global citizens.

Location

Located a 25 minute drive from downtown Auckland and on the edge of the Waitakere Ranges we have the best of both worlds. The community is art focused and nearby are art galleries, theatres, and dance schools easily accessed by students. There is a local market on weekends featuring local artisanal products. The shopping mall is about a 20 minute walk, or 5 minute bus ride, with trains to the city departing from there.

Purpose

Students come to us for different lengths of time and with different purposes. Some are here for a short time, with the purpose to learn and grow through the experience of immersing themselves in another culture. Others are here for two or three years with the intention of gaining university entrance and then continue with tertiary education.

We make it a priority to get to know our students and we care about what each of them need in order to meet their goals and succeed. Students and parents alike comment that they are very happy with the personalized attention we give them to ensure they reach their academic and personal goals.

It is a privilege to share this journey with our students and celebrate with them as they reach their goals. The international team here is proud to be part of the students’ experiences in New Zealand and we work hard to make it the best it can be.

Auckland

Auckland has a population of about 1.5 million people and is a great study destination. The city is surrounded by two harbours and is called ‘The City of Sails’. There are museums, festivals, markets, lots of cafes, restaurants and shops. Central Auckland is easily accessible by train or bus from Green Bay.

About West Auckland

Our school is located in Green Bay, a suburb of West Auckland, approximately 17km west of Auckland City and 25 minutes’ drive from Auckland’s International Airport. Green Bay offers a safe, friendly environment for you to learn and experience New Zealand culture. Titirangi is our nearest village and is well known for its art gallery, theatre and monthly market. The Waitakere ranges are on our doorstep with plenty of opportunity for hiking and visiting the wild west coast beaches. There are also local tennis and squash courts and a golf course right next door to school.

Climate

The warmest months in Auckland are December, January and February, and the coldest June, July and August. The weather can be changeable, therefore it is important to be prepared for whatever weather may come. Summer Average Temperature: Low: 12 C High: 24 C In summer a light jacket or sweater is useful if the weather turns cooler. It is also advisable to use sunblock and wear a hat during the summer months. Winter Average Temperature: Low 9C High: 15 C . Although this doesn’t sound that cold, many students feel the cold more here than in their home countries as not many homes here have central heating. In winter you will need warmer clothing. A small compact umbrella can easily be kept in a backpack so that you are prepared for our wetter months.

New Zealand has a very modern banking system and almost everybody has a bank account. It's the safest, most convenient way to manage money.
