Internship: Financial Services

Thursday, 17th November 2022 at 11:50am

Making the most of opportunities that come her way, Manaal Naeem is excited about her future - having recently completed a Finacial Services Internship with BNZ, Buddle Findlay and Grant Thornton.

The Financial Services week-long internship was part of an annual charity auction prize, held by BNZ and is a fantastic opportunity for young people to get an inside view into what is involved in working in Financial Services. Doug Cowan Barristers and Solicitors kindly donated this prize to a student who showed genuine interest in pursuing a career in business. Manaal, who is currently studying a Bachelor of Commerce at Auckland University, says she is extremely grateful for the experience, and having spent time with the BNZ data insights team, feels this is the sort of work she'd like to do.

The week long experience enabled Manaal to connect with senior business leaders and decision makers, while receiving guidance on personal and professional development. Spending one day with Buddle Findlay’s law team, one day with Grant Thornton, and three days at BNZ including ‘A Day in the Life of’ a Head of Growth Sectors, joined Business and Commercial banking teams, and learned about lending, funding, credit, and growing businesses.

BNZ General Manager Growth Sectors, Brandon Jackson, sent an email to GBHS Careers Advisor, Melissa Cowan, saying "Manaal is a credit to her school as well as her family".

"... I went through how a bank works, how it's structured and where various career opportunities lie. We discussed the importance of network building and gave her various examples, backed up with other people in varied roles explaining how they work and got to where they are now. I took her to lunch with a mortgage broker to see how that part of the industry works. She loved the data insights team and felt that was the sort of work she'd like to do. It was cool to see her light up as she reflected on it."

Internships are great for professional development, networking and opening opportunities for young people, and are powerful on a CV.

It is great to see students fully excel and embrace opportunities!
