Did you know that Year 13 Dean, Gabbie Perry, not only teaches sports, but plays sports at an elite level too?

Earlier this month, we proudly shared our talented teacher's news of her successful selection for the elite women's New Zealand Interzone Underwater Hockey Championships. The Interzone Championships is New Zealand’s most prestigious underwater hockey tournament, made up of the country’s top players to compete for their home region: Northern, Central, Southern.

We are pleased to report that Gabbie was part of the winning team - with Northern A taking out Central A 1-0 in the grand finals, held last weekend!

Gabbie, who plays on the defence line as goalie, and wing, was first introduced to the extreme sport at the age of 15 while in high school. Her passion for the game keeps her in good physical fitness - perfect attributes for teaching Physical Education and keeping up with the Year 13 students in her cohort.

So...what is underwater hockey? Underwater hockey combines speed, skill, teamwork - and the ability to hold your breath for a very long time. Combining the disciplines of ice hockey and swimming to create a competitive and fast paced team watersport. Underwater Hockey was invented in the 1950s by the British Navy as a way of keeping divers in shape while improving fitness and efficiency under water. It has continued to become a popular and growing sport worldwide.

Kia ora e te whānau; This is a friendly reminder that the PPTA has announced the date for a second nationwide one-day strike, to take place on Wednesday 29th March 2023. Please be advised Green Bay High School will be closed for instruction.

If your child will need to be supervised at school on Wednesday 29 March, please contact Deputy Principal Sandy Begg: sandy.begg@greenbayhigh.school.nz before Tuesday 28th March. Students who are supervised at school will be working online and independently.

PLEASE NOTE:
(1) The Fono previously scheduled for Wednesday 29 March has been CANCELLED.
(2) The Year 9 Rounders Day tournament previously scheduled for Friday 31 March has been POSTPONED to a later date in the year. Classes for all students will run as per the usual Friday timetable.

Scheduled trips (offsite) will still go ahead as planned:
(1) 01PED Pe Ki O Rahi Tournament - (29 March) Students are to assemble by the school gym at 9am, wearing PE uniform.
(2) 02PEO Surf Camp (29 - 30 March) - Students are to assemble outside the Sports Office at 8am, ready to go.
(3) NZSS Satellite Volleyball Tournament (Games for 29 March) - Students are to assemble outside the Sports Office - students must check their emails for the confirmed meeting time. (Draws are dependent on results of the previous day).
(4) Boys' Football 1st Xl pre-season game (29 March, 4pm at Rutherford) - Transport details will be emailed to students involved.
(5) The School Ball will still go ahead, as scheduled for Friday 31 March.

There will be meetings held over the next few days between the Ministry of Education and the PPTA to try to avert the strike. Please be advised Green Bay High School will be closed for instruction.

GBHS has over 40 Winter Sports Teams! Help them to be the best!

School sports are about to kick off the winter season, with Green Bay High School being represented with over 40 winter teams. Although it is fantastic to see and support these teams to achieve their dreams, we need your help! If you can help coach, manage, or transport - our Director of Sport, Hamish Mckay, would love to hear from you. Please send Hamish an email, or give him a call on 817-8173 ext 233.

With the Summer Season coming to an end, we have some recent accolades to add to our bow:

Water Polo boys finished their season undefeated.

Junior and Senior Tennis teams continued to have outstanding results across the season, with Clayton Fell (Year 12) placing No1 seed in the Senior Boys' Team.

Senior Volleyball won the Western Zones at the Auckland Champs and are looking forward to the upcoming North Island Summer Tournament.

And...a huge shout-out must go to Clayton Fell, who recently swam the Double Crossing (2km) with the official time of 26mins 40sec and placed 2nd out of 366 finishers!

Ruby Livesey and Issy Firth's Tongariro Trek:

For close cousins, Ruby and Issy, setting challenges helps them to lead to a dynamic, healthy lifestyle - and when it involves taking in some of Aotearoa's spectacular sights and sounds, this makes it all the more memorable!

Last weekend Ruby (Year 9) and Issy (Year 10) trekked across the volcanic alpine landscape as part of a guided group, between Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, through the South Crater and climbed the Red Crater. "A definite highlight was the sheer cliff drops and amazing views," says Issy. "And spending time together, making memories," added Ruby.

This challenging and physical adventure was just one of the 'expeditions' the cousins have done together, with their mums by their side - and say it is becoming part of a family tradition to take time-out.

This is such a fantastic idea!

Year 10 students Pheobe Brown, Emelia Queenin, Bella Wood, and Krisha Karippail participated in a Buddies Without Borders forum, with the aim of creating a website to promote happiness for teenagers - proposing a concept to solve NZ’s mental health crisis. It was great to see so many students joining the dots with number properties and operations, measurement, geometry, data analysis and probability, and algebra during today’s great International Day of Mathematics!

Green Bay High School students came away with some great results, during the recent Fencing North Competition, winning 3 of the 4 epee titles.
This competition is one of the main age-banded Fencing North competitions for the year and involves ranking points (used for National ranking).

U17 Boys: 1st Jack Hansen (Year 12), 5th Travis West-Hill (Year 11)
U17 Girls: 1st Elsie Lins (Year 13), 3rd Olivia Woolford (Year 11)

These fencers have been training hard, and have some exciting out-of-Auckland competition plans for this season.

Congratulations to James Price (Year 13) who travelled with the New Zealand Fencing team to compete in the U20 Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships, held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

James was the top performing NZ Men’s Epeeist, and the only one to make it through to the second round of the competition. Winning half of his 6 bouts in the first stage of poules, James then went through to the second round as 33rd seed out of 74 tough competitors - with a final placing of 45th, after Direct Elimination bouts.

Green Bay High School is always awash with colour, fun, laughter, and sportsmanship during our school-wide House events. House competitions provide a sense of competition and whanau support, through a range of school-based activities. House events are run throughout the year with points awarded for each event. As well as school-wide competitions, individual students can earn House points for outstanding academic or community-based achievements. The Leader Board, situated in Student Services, clearly shows which House is in the lead. Students belong to one of five Houses that are named after our local beaches: Anawhata (black), Karekare (yellow), Muriwai (blue), Piha (green), and Whatipu (red).

Which HOUSE do you belong to? Check your Timetable, the first letter of your Form Class shows which House you are associated with eg P9JLY = Piha, Yr9, Form Teacher: Anna Jolly.
