I was lucky enough to be in New Plymouth this week at the Annual Secondary Schools’ Principals’ Conference. It’s always good connecting with other school leaders, hearing what schools are doing around the country, and sharing the great things that are happening at Green Bay High School.

This week we have celebrated Samoan Language Week and it was great seeing so many students celebrating Samoan language and culture across the week. Seeing students proudly sharing their own culture and tradition at today’s shared lunch was fantastic. Another cause for celebration this week was finding out that Year 10 student Benji Godsmark is off to the NASA space camp later in the year. It’s such an exciting opportunity and I’m looking forward to hearing all about his trip when he returns. Click on the following link to read all about it!

Students looked stunning in their puletasi and lava-lava (traditional Samoan dress) today, in celebration of Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa / Samoan Language Week. The week-long events, held at school, culminated in traditional prayer and a shared lunch.

As you can see in the photos, students are certainly embracing Mitamita i lau gagana, maua'a lou fa'asinomaga' being proud of their language and identity.

Year 10 Photography students have mastered the art of capturing a moment in time.

Check out the amazing photo of a water-filled balloon bursting, enveloping fingers, before breaking up into minute droplets! (Photo 1: submitted by Olive Cochrane, Samantha Keleti, and Hazel Day).

Students have been learning about camera exposure, specifically how shutter speed works.

Working in teams of three, students experimented with fast shutter speeds, adjusting the amount of time their camera spends to take a picture. As part of their portfolio, students had to select their best two shots, recording how they created the image and the settings (shutter speed) used.

REMINDER: Kia ora e te whānau; Secondary school teachers nationwide, who are members of the PPTA, are continuing with their industrial action. After a pause in this action to negotiate with the government there has been no resolution so rostering home will resume, starting TODAY, Thursday 1 June with Year 12 students.

Across term two, teachers and staff who are PPTA members will refuse to give up scheduled planning and marking time to relieve for absent teachers or positions that are vacant and will also not attend meetings outside regular school hours.

As part of the industrial action, year groups will continue to be rostered home on particular days across the term. There may well be an escalation of this industrial action and as we receive this information we will continue to keep you informed of how this has an impact on the school and on your child.

The year groups will be rostered home on the following days, as per the original schedule (seen below):

Year 12: Thursday 1 June
Year 10: Tuesday 6 June
Year 9: Thursday 8 June

We remain hopeful that there will be a positive resolution between the PPTA and the Ministry of Education.

Make Your Move! The great GBHS Chess Blitz is underway ... The library was abuzz with knights and castles today as (check)mates plotted their revenge to advance to the Grand Finals. Congrats to Luke Blake who secured a win against Socratis Karsas in today's semi-finals. Be sure to tune in to see who takes out the competition on Friday, winning coveted House Points. Finalists are: Luke Blake, Scott Morgan-Smith, and Koby Peters.

Serving families in Green Bay, Titirangi and the surrounding areas, our focus is on learning that is relevant, exciting and meets the needs of all our students. At Green Bay High School, teachers know their students, they make time to foster strong relationships and support all students to achieve their best throughout the five years they are with us.

Have you read the News? Green Bay High School student, Year 10 student Benji Godsmark is off on a mission!

Benji is light years ahead of his peers, having been selected to take part in The 2023 Advance Space Camp, at the US Space and Rocket Center in Alabama on a 10-day trip to NASA.

Benji's opportunity to study space exploration and further engage in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects is not only a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it will also inspire him to lead the way for future generations. While away at Space Camp, Benji will take part in practical astronaut training exercises, including a simulated space mission.

Supporting Young People to be Safer Online: Green Bay High School is pleased to present a Netsafe Parent Information Evening.

Join us for a free presentation and discussion for parents and whānau on Thursday 15 June at 6.30pm in our school auditorium.

Netsafe's Education Advisor will talk about the risks, challenges, and opportunities of digital technology and the practical ways we can help young people to be safe only.
We will provide information and tools to support young people to safely navigate online environments and manage those challenges and risks.

Student Photography in local Gallery! Having an eye for detail and a knack for making the invisible visible, Year 13 students Danika Cain and Sofia Bottomley-Gadd, alongside Naomi Rowllings (Year 11) have their photographic work on display at Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery, as part of 'InSight' an initiative led by artists Mindy Catt and Christa Napier-Robertson.

Their work is currently showcased at the Gallery in Lopdell House (from 13 May - 16 July 2023). This project was made possible thanks to the Waitākere Ranges Local Board, Creative Communities, and additional support from an Ara Taiohi Youth Week grant.

Danika, Sofia, and Naomi experimented with photographic processes to explore a range of subjects, turning everyday genres into something extraordinary!

School Values in Action: Year 10 students Bella Wood and Lily Roebeck are doing their best to raise awareness of those in need - and would love your help!

Inspired by their form teacher, Barb Brewer, who raised the topic of demonstrating school values to help others in the community, Bella and Lily decided to take up the challenge school-wide and make a difference.

Planning, advertising, and speaking at upcoming levels assemblies and staff meetings, are all part of their plan to inform students, staff, and the community about the Give-a-Kid-a-Blanket Winter Appeal.

If you would like to contribute to this worthy cause and keep the winter ills and chills at bay, please bring your donated second-hand blankets, duvets, and/or sleeping bags to the school office. They will be warmly received by Bella and Lily - and taken to Titirangi Library, ready for collection. Students can drop off donated items to Student Reception or G6 at Form time.

During these colder months (June and July) the Give-a-Kid-a-Blanket charity primarily focuses on the West Auckland area, in collaboration with support services such as Waitemata Police, WDHB public health nurses and Social Workers, Women’s Refuge groups and Charitable Trusts, gathering donations from community hubs for instant distribution.

Scientific Research Project - Discovering the secrets of Lichen!
Green Bay High School Chemistry and Biology teacher, Dr. Angelo Tedoldi, has selected a group of students to be part of a scientific research project, investigating the wonderful world of natural ecosystems with lichens leading the way.

The school science department has received funding from WeSTEM to run an investigative project where students will be collecting lichens from different trees throughout the school over the next couple of weeks. These samples will be sent to the team's science partner, Research Geologist Adam Martin at GNS Science (Dunedin) who specialises in Geology, Petrology, Geochronology, and Geochemistry. The project is using lichen as a bioindicator of air quality.

WeSTEM is an initiative of Te Hononga Akoranga COMET and is funded by the Ministry of Pacific People’s Toloa Community Impact funds to increase Pacific people’s participation in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).

Did you know? Symbiosis in lichens is so well-balanced that lichens have been considered self-contained miniature ecosystems. Some lichens are hundreds of years old and can be used to date the surfaces on which they grow.

Ready, Set, Count! Congratulations to our fast-paced and quick-thinking Math Olympiad team, who recently took part in the Auckland University Mathematical Olympiad.

The aim of the Maths Olympiad is to foster further interest in Mathematics and to provide our rangatahi with the opportunity to exhibit their problem-solving skills, by completing a wide range of challenges put to them by Auckland University mathematicians.

National Spanish Debate: Green Bay High School entered two teams into the National Spanish Debate, held at Rangitoto College last week.

Congratulations to: Ben Wyness, Anjelique Jessup-Smyser, Evie Stokes (3rd place) and
David Kearse, Anika Tsukihara, Ella Smith (4th place).

Totally immersed in español (Spanish) the debate allows students to expand their Spanish vocabulary and comprehension. During the competition, each team had three rounds of debates.

Spanish teacher, Anna Kempkers, says the teams were given a moot beforehand, with 40 minutes to write their debates, before putting their knowledge into action by debating against teams from other schools in front of a panel of judges.

"It is super impressive as they really are proper, formal debates where the students not only have to think critically but also write and speak accurately and effectively in Spanish."

"I am so proud of them", she added.

Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa (Sunday 28 May to Saturday 3 June 2023)

The theme for Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa - Samoa Language Week 2023 is 'Mitamita i lau gagana, maua'a lou fa'asinomaga' which means 'Be proud of your language and grounded in your identity'. This year's theme focuses on the importance of the Samoan language and identity.

The typical greeting among friends and 'aiga (family) is a hug and kiss on the cheek.

The Samoan language has many components, depending on the situation and the company you are speaking to. There is 'simple' Samoan, more 'complex' Samoan, there is 'everyday' language, and there is also 'respectful' language. There is language specific to young people, and then language that pertains to chiefs and orators. The Samoan language has depth!

Kia ora e te whānau; It’s been a fantastic week with a lot happening around the school. Thank you to everyone who responded to our survey on the use of phones at GBHS. We had 382 responses from the community and 428 from students and this information will help the Board of Trustees to make decisions going forward. We’ll be back in touch shortly with key themes from the survey and next steps.

We have had a real focus on career education this week with students at all year levels taking part in activities focused on their interests, skills and future pathways. Thanks to everyone who went to the Careers Out West Expo held at the Trust Arena. There was a great turnout of GBHS students and whānau at this inaugural event.

Since retiring as Deputy Principal from Green Bay High School a few years ago, emerging New Zealand artist, John Allpress, has reignited his passion for painting.

John's artistic style is an exploration of aesthetics, embodying existence in the moment and revealing an insight into art making - holding on, letting go, pushing through, stepping back, and allowing ideas to blossom.

John's compositional ideas and approaches to applying, layering, or uncovering paint is adaptive and emergent. Creating a masterpiece of colour, texture, vision, and exploration.

We are very proud to promote John's next exhibition showcasing a limited number of original, breathtaking artworks, from acclaimed and emerging New Zealand artists. Held at Allpress Studio, 8 Drake Street, Auckland, the Allpress Studio has exposes an ever-changing landscape of inspirational eye candy, from leading and new emerging New Zealand artists.

"All Systems Go!" Is a free programme designed to support Autistic students and their families through the transition between Secondary and Tertiary education.

Beginning 26 June 2023, hosted by Inclusive Learning Advisers at the University of Auckland's Libraries and Learning Services who work alongside neurodiverse students to enhance their academic success.

It is suitable for students and their whānau who:

Have a diagnosis of Autism
Are in their final year of secondary school
Are considering tertiary study at any university in 2024

The programme has four key components. Students and whanau are encouraged to engage with all aspects of the programme, but can choose to participate in the parts they feel are relevant to them. This combined West Auckland Secondary Schools event provides students with the fantastic opportunity to meet over 80 different organisations, including universities, polytechnics, training providers, and industry representatives.

Open to the public this evening 4pm - 7:30pm. All welcome!

FRIENDLY REMINDER: We have been advised by the PPTA, that strike action has been suspended from 22 May - 30 May.

This means that there will be NO ROSTERING HOME for Year 11 (25 May) and Year 13 (30 May), as previously scheduled.

GBHS students participated in the Auckland Regional Secondary School Battle of the Pans Cooking Competition recently.

Taking part in 'live' competitions, young chefs had to prepare and present two portions of each dish under time pressure. Congratulations to:

Ayesha Kraft, Creative Burger: Kiwi Chicken Burger with Chef's special sauce

Each student gained a bronze medal in the competition (competing against over 20 other students from schools across Auckland).

Across term two, teachers and staff who are PPTA members will refuse to give up scheduled planning and marking time to relieve for absent teachers or positions that are vacant and will also not attend meetings outside regular school hours.

As part of the industrial action, year groups will continue to be rostered home on particular days across the term. There may well be an escalation of this industrial action and as we receive this information we will continue to keep you informed of how this has an impact on the school and on your child.

The year groups will be rostered home on the following days, as per the original schedule (seen below):

Year 12: Thursday 1 June
Year 10: Tuesday 6 June
Year 9: Thursday 8 June

Make Your Move! The great GBHS Chess Blitz is underway ... The library was abuzz with knights and castles today as (check)mates plotted their revenge to advance to the Grand Finals. Congrats to Luke Blake who secured a win against Socratis Karsas in today's semi-finals. Be sure to tune in to see who takes out the competition on Friday, winning coveted House Points. Finalists are: Luke Blake, Scott Morgan-Smith, and Koby Peters.

Have you read the News? Green Bay High School student, Year 10 student Benji Godsmark is off on a mission!

Benji is light years ahead of his peers, having been selected to take part in The 2023 Advance Space Camp, at the US Space and Rocket Center in Alabama on a 10-day trip to NASA.

Benji's opportunity to study space exploration and further engage in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects is not only a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it will also inspire him to lead the way for future generations. While away at Space Camp, Benji will take part in practical astronaut training exercises, including a simulated space mission.

Supporting Young People to be Safer Online: Green Bay High School is pleased to present a Netsafe Parent Information Evening.

Join us for a free presentation and discussion for parents and whānau on Thursday 15 June at 6.30pm in our school auditorium.

Netsafe's Education Advisor will talk about the risks, challenges, and opportunities of digital technology and the practical ways we can help young people to be safe only.
We will provide information and tools to support young people to safely navigate online environments and manage those challenges and risks.

Student Photography in local Gallery! Having an eye for detail and a knack for making the invisible visible, Year 13 students Danika Cain and Sofia Bottomley-Gadd, alongside Naomi Rowllings (Year 11) have their photographic work on display at Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery, as part of 'InSight' an initiative led by artists Mindy Catt and Christa Napier-Robertson.

Their work is currently showcased at the Gallery in Lopdell House (from 13 May - 16 July 2023). This project was made possible thanks to the Waitākere Ranges Local Board, Creative Communities, and additional support from an Ara Taiohi Youth Week grant.

Danika, Sofia, and Naomi experimented with photographic processes to explore a range of subjects, turning everyday genres into something extraordinary!

School Values in Action: Year 10 students Bella Wood and Lily Roebeck are doing their best to raise awareness of those in need - and would love your help!

Inspired by their form teacher, Barb Brewer, who raised the topic of demonstrating school values to help others in the community, Bella and Lily decided to take up the challenge school-wide and make a difference.

Planning, advertising, and speaking at upcoming levels assemblies and staff meetings, are all part of their plan to inform students, staff, and the community about the Give-a-Kid-a-Blanket Winter Appeal.

If you would like to contribute to this worthy cause and keep the winter ills and chills at bay, please bring your donated second-hand blankets, duvets, and/or sleeping bags to the school office. They will be warmly received by Bella and Lily - and taken to Titirangi Library, ready for collection. Students can drop off donated items to Student Reception or G6 at Form time.

During these colder months (June and July) the Give-a-Kid-a-Blanket charity primarily focuses on the West Auckland area, in collaboration with support services such as Waitemata Police, WDHB public health nurses and Social Workers, Women’s Refuge groups and Charitable Trusts, gathering donations from community hubs for instant distribution.

Scientific Research Project - Discovering the secrets of Lichen!
Green Bay High School Chemistry and Biology teacher, Dr. Angelo Tedoldi, has selected a group of students to be part of a scientific research project, investigating the wonderful world of natural ecosystems with lichens leading the way.

The school science department has received funding from WeSTEM to run an investigative project where students will be collecting lichens from different trees throughout the school over the next couple of weeks. These samples will be sent to the team's science partner, Research Geologist Adam Martin at GNS Science (Dunedin) who specialises in Geology, Petrology, Geochronology, and Geochemistry. The project is using lichen as a bioindicator of air quality.

WeSTEM is an initiative of Te Hononga Akoranga COMET and is funded by the Ministry of Pacific People’s Toloa Community Impact funds to increase Pacific people’s participation in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).

Did you know? Symbiosis in lichens is so well-balanced that lichens have been considered self-contained miniature ecosystems. Some lichens are hundreds of years old and can be used to date the surfaces on which they grow.

Ready, Set, Count! Congratulations to our fast-paced and quick-thinking Math Olympiad team, who recently took part in the Auckland University Mathematical Olympiad.

The aim of the Maths Olympiad is to foster further interest in Mathematics and to provide our rangatahi with the opportunity to exhibit their problem-solving skills, by completing a wide range of challenges put to them by Auckland University mathematicians.

National Spanish Debate: Green Bay High School entered two teams into the National Spanish Debate, held at Rangitoto College last week.

Congratulations to: Ben Wyness, Anjelique Jessup-Smyser, Evie Stokes (3rd place) and
David Kearse, Anika Tsukihara, Ella Smith (4th place).

Totally immersed in español (Spanish) the debate allows students to expand their Spanish vocabulary and comprehension. During the competition, each team had three rounds of debates.

Spanish teacher, Anna Kempkers, says the teams were given a moot beforehand, with 40 minutes to write their debates, before putting their knowledge into action by debating against teams from other schools in front of a panel of judges.

"It is super impressive as they really are proper, formal debates where the students not only have to think critically but also write and speak accurately and effectively in Spanish."

"I am so proud of them", she added.

Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa (Sunday 28 May to Saturday 3 June 2023)

The theme for Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa - Samoa Language Week 2023 is 'Mitamita i lau gagana, maua'a lou fa'asinomaga' which means 'Be proud of your language and grounded in your identity'. This year's theme focuses on the importance of the Samoan language and identity.

The typical greeting among friends and 'aiga (family) is a hug and kiss on the cheek.

The Samoan language has many components, depending on the situation and the company you are speaking to. There is 'simple' Samoan, more 'complex' Samoan, there is 'everyday' language, and there is also 'respectful' language. There is language specific to young people, and then language that pertains to chiefs and orators. The Samoan language has depth!

Kia ora e te whānau; It’s been a fantastic week with a lot happening around the school. Thank you to everyone who responded to our survey on the use of phones at GBHS. We had 382 responses from the community and 428 from students and this information will help the Board of Trustees to make decisions going forward. We’ll be back in touch shortly with key themes from the survey and next steps.

We have had a real focus on career education this week with students at all year levels taking part in activities focused on their interests, skills and future pathways. Thanks to everyone who went to the Careers Out West Expo held at the Trust Arena. There was a great turnout of GBHS students and whānau at this inaugural event.

Since retiring as Deputy Principal from Green Bay High School a few years ago, emerging New Zealand artist, John Allpress, has reignited his passion for painting.

John's artistic style is an exploration of aesthetics, embodying existence in the moment and revealing an insight into art making - holding on, letting go, pushing through, stepping back, and allowing ideas to blossom.

John's compositional ideas and approaches to applying, layering, or uncovering paint is adaptive and emergent. Creating a masterpiece of colour, texture, vision, and exploration.

We are very proud to promote John's next exhibition showcasing a limited number of original, breathtaking artworks, from acclaimed and emerging New Zealand artists. Held at Allpress Studio, 8 Drake Street, Auckland, the Allpress Studio has exposes an ever-changing landscape of inspirational eye candy, from leading and new emerging New Zealand artists.

"All Systems Go!" Is a free programme designed to support Autistic students and their families through the transition between Secondary and Tertiary education.

Beginning 26 June 2023, hosted by Inclusive Learning Advisers at the University of Auckland's Libraries and Learning Services who work alongside neurodiverse students to enhance their academic success.

It is suitable for students and their whānau who:

Have a diagnosis of Autism
Are in their final year of secondary school
Are considering tertiary study at any university in 2024

The programme has four key components. Students and whanau are encouraged to engage with all aspects of the programme, but can choose to participate in the parts they feel are relevant to them. GBHS students participated in the Auckland Regional Secondary School Battle of the Pans Cooking Competition recently.

Taking part in 'live' competitions, young chefs had to prepare and present two portions of each dish under time pressure. Congratulations to:
